The hyphnotic technique is a technique of repeated patterns for minutes that change in minimum details: a filter that opens, a percussion that enters and leaves, an echo that grows. It usually moves between 130 and 138 BPM, has little melody and seeks to get the track into a kind of trance by accumulation, not by climbing.
Where it comes from
The repetition is in the techno from the beginning, from Robert Hood's minimal to Basic Channel's techno dub in Berlin. What is now called hypnotic techno takes shape in the years 2000 around the scene of Rome, with Donato Dozzy as a central figure, along with names like Neel, Giorgio Gigli and Dino Sabatini. Dozzy and Neel released the album in 2012 Voices From The Lake in label Prologue, one of the gender references, and in 2016 they founded the label Spazio Disponible.
From there the sound extends: Sweden with Hypnus Records, which is presented as label of «Psychedelic deep technique»; United States with producers like Mike Parker or Rrose; Japan with Wata Igarashi. The Labyrinth festival, in the mountains of Japan, became one of its religious scenarios.
How to recognize it
- The rhythm rules. The center of the mixture is the percussion, not a pad or a melody.
- Small and constant changes. Nothing happens at once; everything is gradually transformed.
- Long themesseven to twelve minutes, thought to chain.
- No drops. The tension is sustained, it's not loose.

How to brush
The hypnotic techno asks for long, two or three minutes, mixtures in which two discs live together and the listener does not know when the subject has changed. In vinyl that forces to choose discs that fit in tone and texture, because there is no automatic synchrony to cover a shock. That's why it's a style that works better in sets of three hours or more than in one hour festival slots.
