What is the techno dub: from Basic Channel to today

For 404Error, DJ of deep technique in vinyl in Madrid since 1995.

The dub techno is slow techno (about 118 to 128 BPM) built around a sound treatment: short chords passed by delay and reverb until the tail of the echo becomes the main element. It was born in Berlin in the early 1990s with Basic Channel, which crossed the Detroit techno with the mixing techniques of the Jamaican dub.

Origin: Berlin, 1993

Basic Channel is the project of Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus. Its first disks come out in 1993 and 1994 and set the formula: a chord that is repeated, filtered and undone in echo on a constant bulb. Ernestus had been carrying the Hard Wax record store since the late 1980s, a meeting point for the Berlinese techno.

Other projects are growing around the duo: Maurizio, Rhythm & Sound (its closest side to the reggae) and the label Chain Reaction, active since 1995, where they published artists such as Monolake or Porter Ricks. The compilation BCD It brings together a lot of those first basic channel records.

How to recognize it

  • The effect is the instrument. Delay, reverb and filters matter more than melody.
  • Short and repeated agreements they change color with the filter.
  • Deep and round gravitywith a lot of space around.
  • Slow season and long themes.
  • It works outside the club. It's the subgenus of the techno that best can hear it at home.

Dub techno and deep techno

Today's deep techno owes a lot to the techno dub: the importance of space, patience and the severe that fill without pushing come from there. The difference is of focus: in the dub techno the echo is everything; in the deep technique no longer weigh the general atmosphere and texture. I detail it in deep, hypnotic, dub and hard techno: how they differ and history of deep techno.

How it fits in a session

In the cabin, the dub techno works very well in two moments: opening the night, when the room is still filling, and closing it, when the public no longer needs to push. In the middle of a deep techno set it is used to lower the density without cutting the pulse.
