For 404Error, DJ de techno en vinyl in Madrid since 1995. A resident of the Thursday of Electropolis in Specka in the 2000's and still today pinching four styles that live together in my boxes of vinyls.
To program well a techno night is not enough to choose good DJs: you have to put every style in your strip. The deep techno works better by opening or on long nights, the hyphnotic techno holds the central schedule without the need for peaks, the breaks break the monotony of the black bulb and the EBM gives a dark and physical turn to the final straight or to a thematic night. This guide explains what each one asks for, what time and how long it needs to work.
Quick summary for promoters
| Style | usual BPM | Best stripe | Minimum recommended duration | What brings you to the night |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deep techno | 125-132 | Warm-up, long nights, closing | 2 hours | Atmosphere, deep, a room that fills without burning |
| Hypnotic technique | 130-138 | Central time | 2-3 hours | Tension sustained by repetition, concentrated track |
| Breaks | 125-135 | Transitions, second room, closing parties | 1.5 hours | Rhythm broken, groove, energy change without rising tempo |
| EBM | 115-130 | Final straight, theme nights, second room | 1.5 hours | Physical and dark sound, connection to the public post-punk and industrial |
The tempo ranges are indicative and come out of what I pinch and from the vinyls from every scene. The full definitions are in deep techno, what is the hypnotic technique, breaks and what the EBM is.
Deep techno: the opening and long nights
The deep techno is air-centered: content bulb, long bass and slowly changing layers. It has just what a room is still being filled with: space in the sound and an energy that grows without haste. That's why it's the style that works best in the warm-up and in five or six-hour formats, where the DJ can really build.
What doesn't work is to put it in a 60-minute gap between two peak DJs: it doesn't give it time to take off and the track sees it as a downhill. If your sign is hard techno, a deep DJ can open perfectly, provided you deliver the room in an agreed tempo with the one behind you. I detail it in how to make a good techno warm-up.
Hypnotic techno: the central time without peaks
The hypnotic techno works by accumulation: repeated patterns during minutes that change in minimum details. There are no drops or hikes, and yet the track is not empty, because the tension is held. It is the natural style of the central time on deep techno nights, and the school coming from Rome (Donato Dozzy, Neel) and labels like Spazio Disponiile, Prologue or Hypnus has made it a language of its own.
He asks the promoter for two things: time (at least two or three hours) and good sound equipment, because grace is in the grave and in the details of the percussion. In a poor system, the hypnotic sounds flat.
Breaks: break the bulb to black without losing track
The breaks are dance music built on broken battery rhythms. On a techno night they work as a change of air: they keep the tempo and weight of the bass, but change the rhythmic pattern and the track moves otherwise. The British nu skool breaks (Adam Freeland, Plump DJs, Stanton Warriors and labels like Marine Parade or Finger Lickin ') left a huge vinyl catalog that fits well with the current techno and electro.
Where to place them: in the second room, in a transition strip between two DJs of different styles or in a more festive closure. In the main room of a night of hypnotic techno, an entire set of breaks breaks the line; a few vinyls broken into a set of techno, instead, refresh it.
EBM: dark, physical and with its own audience
The EBM (Electronic Body Music) was born in the early 1980s in Belgium and Germany with groups such as Front 242, DAF or Nitzer Ebb: analog sequences, repetitive low and martial rhythms at medium tempo. Today it rings again in techno clubs by producers and DJs like Phase Fatale, Rein, Schwefelgelb or Helena Hauff, which mix it with techno, electro and acid.
It works very well on the final straight of a dark night, on theme nights and in cycles that want to attract the public post-punk, industrial and darkwave, which does not always go to techno parties. Its tempo, lower than that of the peak techno, forces to think of the order: better as its own block or as a final turn than in the middle of a set at 135 BPM.
How to combine them in the same night
- Deep techno night (single room, 6 hours): deep opening techno, hypnotic techno in the center, close back to deep or to dub techno.
- Dark night with two rooms: main room with hypnotic techno; second room with EBM and breaks, which attracts another audience and gives breath to the main track.
- A collective cycle with a single DJ (all night long): a DJ that pinches the four styles can build all night from beginning to end, from deep to EBM, without sudden cabin changes.
Whatever the format, agree first with each DJ the input and output tempo. It is the detail that changes the result most and the one that is least spoken.
Why the format matters: vinyl, digital or hybrid
A 100% vinyl set is neither better nor worse by definition, but it is different: each album has chosen and bought someone, the selection is shorter and more thought out, and a part of the audience values it. In return, it requires more of the cabin: two calibrated swirls, needles in good condition and a table isolated from the vibrations of the bulb. The full rider is in how to hire a DJ of techno.
Frequently asked questions
What style of techno is better to open one night?
Deep techno and dub techno, for its content (125-132 BPM) and slow development. They fill the room without exhausting the energy the next DJ needs.
Can break and techno be mixed in the same session?
Yes, and it works well if the tempo and the weight of the bass are kept. The breaks give rhythmic variety without raising the BPM.
Does the EBM fit into a techno party?
Yeah, especially on dark nights, second rooms and closures. It has a lower tempo than the peak techno, so it should be programmed as its own block.
How long does a DJ of hypnotic technique need?
At least two hours; three is ideal. In an hour slots does not give time for the repetition to take effect.
